For July’s cover of Reason Magazine, art director Barb Burch asked me to depict six 2016 presidential hopefuls (Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Scott Walker) engaged in a gluttonous free-for-all. The cover story focused on cutting government spending and whether any of the candidates would be able to “tighten their belts” as our next president. Barb must have been reading my mind, as I was itching to caricature some of the candidates when she contacted me.
Plumping up each candidate while maintaining their likeness was a challenge, and fitting the figures in the composition was like piecing together a puzzle. A lot of work went into the sketching and composing stage, but in the end it was well worth it and also a heck of a lot of fun. Detail images below…
